A Collector's Book of Retired Lladró

Genuine Figurines & Their Marks

by Peggy Whiteneck
Deals with all Lladró brands!

For those interested in glass figurines, Fenton Art Glass Beasts, Birds & Butterflies is another of Peggy's books!

Also for those interested in glass, Fenton Art Glass Fairy Lamps & Lights is Peggy's latest book! It focuses on small, candle-lit "lamps" that were first used in the Victorian era to light dark hallways before the invention of gaslight or electricity.

The publisher for these works has gone out of business, but I am pursuing other publishing options for revised and expanded editions of all three. Stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still find advance-ordered and used copies of these books at online booksellers.

El Portal Porcelana Now Search Enabled!

Search for
Users can now search for individual items by title name or by number. (Search result links will open in a separate window.) To search by model name, simply place the title in quotes.

Troubleshooting notes:
  • The search by model name will not work if there's more than one word in the title unless you place the name in quotes. Most Hispania names, however, are pretty generic one-word titles, so if you just type in a keyword, chances are you'll get search results that way, too.
  • The model number search will not work if you place a number sign, brand name, or any other prefix before the number.
  • No letter suffix is required for model numbers in Hispania.
If you don't know the name or model number, you can always browse the catalog category links below to find your particular model.

The Hispania Catalog

This catalog lists only those Hispania items that date from the tenure of Lladró's ownership of the company in the decade of the 1980s. These items may be identified by the "© DAISA" in the mark.

Hispania items were made in a clay or ceramic formula that allowed for larger scale than is generally possible if models are made in fine porcelain. Many of the Hispania animal figurines, for example, are quite large, some nearly lifesize. These items tend to attract multiple bidders on those relatively rare occasions when they show up at internet auction. However, collectors should be advised that, because these items are ceramic and not porcelain, they tend to be thinly potted and vulnerable to damage - something to bear in mind when contemplating the shipping challenges on a life-size German shepherd bought online.

Most of what the company produced, however, was generic housewares: vases, mirrors, lamps, ashtrays, and the like, in plain and somewhat nondescript styles designed for practicality rather than collectiblity. Consequently, I have included, in the Miscellaneous section of the catalog, only some representative examples of the more interesting of these houseware items. Given this self-imposed restriction, the catalog makes no claim to being comprehensive.

The Hispania catalog also differs from other Lladró catalogs on this site in that it is an identification catalog only; I have no retail price history on the items, nor can I venture to estimate values. I have seen some of the larger Hispania animal models go out at internet auction at $200 USD or more. With the exception of animal and bird figurines, however, most Hispania items have achieved only very modest gavel prices ($25 or less) at internet auction.

No portion of this catalog may be reproduced or distributed in any print or electronic venue or for other public consumption without the express permission of Peggy Whiteneck.

A Collector's Book of Retired Lladró

by Peggy Whiteneck
published by
Old Line Publishing, LLC
Hampstead, Maryland

The publisher for this book has ceased publication, and I am now at work on a revised and expanded edition, with a couple of promising leads for a new publishing option. For the moment, then, this book will only be available on the retail market from advance-ordered stock. You can still buy it used - but avoid the scalpers and DO NOT PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR THESE SECOND-HAND BOOKS! There are plenty of reasonably priced secondary market copies still available at online book sellers. Stay tuned to this site for future news on the revised edition!

Ever since its founding in the 1950s and its subsequent, stellar rise to global prominence, collectors have been fascinated with the singular modeling and attention to detail in Lladró Spanish porcelain figurines. Eventually, collectors discovered that Lladró wasn't just one brand, but several. At the same time, other companies began to sprout up all over Spain, particularly around Lladró's own region in Valencia, working "in the Lladró style" and hoping to catch a ride on the tailwinds of its popularity. This book is written to acquaint readers with retired figurines in all the Lladró and Lladró-affiliated brands and to help distinguish them from the work of other Spanish companies. The book features substantive chapters on the Lladró "core brand," NAO by Lladró, Zaphir, Golden Memories, Rosal, and Hispania, complete with representative photos for each brand.
